What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational interviewing is a widely used, versatile counseling method that is effective in facilitating behavior change through resolving ambivalence. A therapist utilizing motivational interviewing will help the client identify and acknowledge problematic behaviors, reflect on the pros and cons of changing the behavior, and explore opportunities to change behavior. The ultimate aim of motivational interviewing is to foster intrinsic (internal) motivation to change, as opposed to extrinsic (external) motivation, and increase a person’s sense of autonomy.
